The Experience - Health & Social Care

Drum Therapy is effective in group work within the health and social care sector. This is because the drum is primal and universal; it has been used for centuries as a healing tool. Paul Bennett is a qualified social worker and uses a person-centred approach in sessions, embracing the recognition of Mind-Body-Spirit as equally valid parts of human existence. See What is Drum Therapy?

Drum Therapy is a creative and fun activity that encourages self-expression. The use of drums is a tool that aids communication. Drum Therapy sessions allow for the expression of emotions. For example, anger can be channelled and managed through drumming with supervision from carers. Confidence building is a goal that can be achieved through a series of sessions.

Drumming can be used for relaxation and to combat stress; certain rhythms assist in altering the brain's pattern and encouraging the production of "alpha waves." Production of endorphins is stimulated which create a sense of well-being. Current clients are an adult mental health group, an older persons' residential home, people with dementia and their carers.
