What is Therapeutic Drumming?

We have put together a working definition:
"Therapeutic drumming is drumming undertaken for beneficial effects.
It can be done alone or with others. It is not limited to any specific tradition or culture and there are no limits to the rhythms or drums that can be used. It is non competitive and encourages individual creativity. Therapeutic drumming is a holistic activity involving all aspects of organismic functioning including physical, cognitive, emotional, psychological and spiritual. As such it can have a healing effect in all of those aspects. Therapeutic drumming takes the form of an active process in which the drummer responds to his/her inner promptings and to external stimuli in order to find a satisfying rhythm. The benefits of therapeutic drumming are numerous and varied."
